The HITECH Act offers financial incentives to physicians who purchase, implement, and meaningfully use an Electronic Health Record (EHR) by the year 2015. For example, physicians who accept Medicare are eligible to receive up to $44,000 over a five year period in incentive payments. Physicians who fail to follow the guidelines within the HITECH Act will be penalized through reductions in their fee schedules commencing in 2015.
In order to improve the quality and lower the cost of healthcare, physicians must become educated in healthcare information technology.
