Ingenix, the healthcare technology subsidiary of UnitedHealth Group, has announced the addition of new features to the electronic prescribing (e-prescribing) functionality of its CareTracker EMR solution. The new Surescripts certified features will allow CareTracker users quick and easy to access patient medication histories and drug benefit information at the point of care.

E-prescribing is a process by which medical practitioners generate and transmit prescriptions electronically to participating pharmacies.  Considering that medication errors are responsible for approximately 7,000 deaths each year in the US, e-prescribing offers an effective way of eliminating errors due to illegible hand-writing of physicians, wrong dosage, and missed drug-to-drug or drug-to-allergy reactions.

The E-prescribing functionality of the CareTracker EMR solution provides physicians with several features that lead to improved care and a higher level of efficiency.  According to Russ Keene, vice president at Ingenix “Doctors who use CareTracker EMR can view historical prescription records from an array of new sources, as well as data that enables them to determine, at the point of care, what the patient’s out-of-pocket costs will be.”

With E-prescribing with CareTracker EMR physicians can –

1) View patient allergy and prescription drug usage history at the point of care.

2) Check patients’ drug benefits information to determine eligibility for specific medication.

3) Check for drug-to-drug and drug-to-allergy reactions, thereby reducing the possibility of adverse drug reactions.

4) Provide patients with an estimate of cost and recommend comparable, lower-cost alternatives.

5) Transmit prescriptions electronically to pharmacies quickly and accurately.

In addition to this, with certification from Surescripts CareTracker EMR users will now have instant access to every major pharmacy in the U.S. (e.g. Walgreens, CVS/pharmacy, Rite Aid, Wal-Mart), many of the nation’s leading payers and PBMs (e.g. Aetna, CVS Caremark, Express Scripts, Medco, Wellpoint) and over 10,000 independent pharmacies nationwide.

“E-prescribing with CareTracker EMR has eliminated nearly all paperwork related to prescription orders, and has saved our office an immeasurable amount of time,” said Douglas Foreman, D.O., who has been using CareTracker EMR since 2007. “Accessing patient charts instantly when writing an online prescription assures me that I am making the best possible decisions for my patients.”

As mentioned by Keene, “Patients and doctors win with this kind of decision support as it promotes safety and cost transparency.”
