With the ANSI 5010 deadline (to avoid penalties) extended to March 31, 2012, members of the healthcare industry have been trying to define “ready” as it relates to implementing ANSI 5010 standards.
There are dozens of different levels of readiness at this time. Some carriers were able to start years ago rebuilding and rewriting their programming code – front to back – to prepare for 5010 and ICD-10. Others, such as California Medicaid, are not able to predict a date when they will be ready to send or receive a 5010 transaction.

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services’ Office for Civil Rights released plans to audit 150 covered entities under its pilot HIPAA audit program. Covered entities should review HIPAA compliance policies and complete a security risk assessment to ready themselves for potential audit.
On November 8, 2011, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services’ Office for Civil Rights (OCR) published on its website the details of its pilot program to perform up to 150 audits of compliance with the privacy, security and breach notification standards (collectively, the Standards) adopted under the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA) and the Health Information Technology for Economic and Clinical Health Act (HITECH Act) between November 2011 and December 2012 (the Pilot Audit Program).

While at MGMA this year in Vegas, I had the opportunity to chat with James Hewitt, CEO of Jardogs. The company, which was founded in 2009, is focused primarily on patient access solutions. While at the show, Jim mentioned that he sits on a CIO roundtable. A frequent topic for the group is patient portals, and specifically how they operate within communities. The group noticed that patients typically were required to use anywhere from 3-6 different portals to connect with the various local hospitals, multi-specialty groups, physician offices, and other entities that together provided their local care. This spawned the questions: How can we create a single point of access to allow patients to interact with all of the disparate systems within a single community? How can we take all the best features of a patient portal, combine them with a personal health record (PHR) and the components of a health information exchange (HIE), and roll them into one product?

Mobile devices like the iPhone, iPad and new Android devices represent one of the biggest opportunities of the last decade to improve service delivery at the patient point of care. Driving the charge are mobile medical apps for EMR, imaging, lab orders and clinical decision support, with FDA 510(k) clearances for apps coming weekly.
But whether the devices are hospital issued – or BYOD owned by staff practitioners – healthcare IT needs an automated framework for secure device provisioning, app development and deployment, compliance monitoring, ongoing support, change management and retirement.
