A server is a computer or device that manages all network resources. There are a few different types of servers.

  • File Server: Dedicated to storing files.
  • Print Server: Dedicated to managing one or more printers
  • Network Server: Dedicated to managing the traffic on a network.
  • Database Server: Dedicated to processing database queries.

As you begin your EHR search, it is important to consider the type of server you would like to have within your practice. If you consider having a file server located within your practice, you will be able to manage and store all of your files (electronic charts).

Many EHRs do offer a web based system, which means that you do NOT need to have a server located within your office, and the server is located offsite and managed by the EHR Company.
