Temporary Certification Program

Jun 21, 2010. Health Information Technology, Politics and HIT.

After the HITECH Act was announced, the medical community waited to find out more information about how to qualify for reimbursements under the Medicare and Medicaid programs.

One of the primary requirements to receive reimbursements is to use a ‘certified’ electronic health record technology. By a physician using a certified technology, it will enable the healthcare provider to become a ‘meaningful user’ and qualify for the EHR incentive programs.

Recently, the Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology announced its final rule for the temporary certification program. This certification program will test and certify electronic health record solutions so providers can begin demonstrating meaningful use.

Physicians can finally be at ease, knowing that there is actually a program that ensures that they will be able to participate in the EHR incentive programs.

Keep in mind that this is a temporary certification program. Therefore, there will be a permanent certification program that will replace this temporary program.

CCHIT and Drummond Group both have responses to the rule up already, and I’m sure we’ll hear soon about who’s first to get their application turned in and accepted. I made two word clouds of their blog responses which show some interesting differences in approach, to say the least.
